Photo of the week: brown ring patch takes out moss

The fungus, Waitea, otherwise known as brown ring patch, is a problem on poa and bentgrass greens. But Dr. Nathaniel Mitkowski and colleagues now report that Waitea is also a pathogen of silvery thread moss (Bryum argenteum)! This new finding, which will be published in February, 2013, may be useful in the development of biocontrols for moss. For the time being, though, it's major role on turf is still unfortunately as a damaging pathogen.…
