A day in the life ...

August 18, 2026

Television station KBC News recently showed this 9 minute profile video of Keya Golf Club superintendent and assistant general manager Andrew McDaniel. This is something like a day in the life kind of show, where the reporter from the television station learns about the job. This show is in Japanese, but the video can also be watched by clicking the gear icon and choosing the audio track in English.

About halfway through the video see if you can spot a very young Clint Mattox, who went on to do so much microdochium patch research at Oregon State University.

This has been an extraordinarily dry summer at Keya Golf Club. Wild boars are in the area, and one got onto the course and tore up some noshiba (Zoysia japonica) rough this week. Andrew’s dog King, who you can see in the video, will need to be vigilant.

How dry has it been at Keya GC compared with normal? For the six week period from July 7 through August 17, there has been no measurable precipitation. I don’t know if that has happened before; it certainly hasn’t happened in the past 40 years. For the past 40 years at this location, the median precipitation during this six week period is 249.8 mm (9.8 inches). This year there hasn’t been any.
