EVIDENCE FOR A CHANGE IN SPECIES NAME FOR COLLETOTRICHUM GRAMINICOLA (ANTHRACNOSE)

JA Crouch, BB Clarke and BI Hillman of Rutgers University have shown that poa and bentgrass anthracnose is caused by Colletotrichum cereale, and not by Colletotrichum graminicola, as had previously been thought. The practical implications for disease management are limited, but future research into the biology, physiology and genetics of plant-pathogen interactions and development of varieties that are resistant to anthracnose may be impacted.
