Fairy Ring and Localized Dry Spot: New Management Approaches

Symptoms caused by the fairy ring complex of fungi include the formation of dark green rings and circles of turf, the appearance of mushrooms and puffballs, turf death, and localized dry spot. These problems are most prevalent on newer bentgrass and bermudagrass greens, tees and fairways. Effective management of symptoms can now be accomplished through a combination of cultural practices (fertility, aerification, wetting agents) and the use of fungicidal products such as flutolanil (Prostar) and azoxystrobin (Heritage) when necessary.
