With just a little bit of magnification, it is possible to identify diseases and insects that are invisible to the naked eye. A hand lens, such as this 7X lens from The Compleat Naturalist (Asheville, NC) will allow you to clearly see characteristic structures such as anthracnose acervuli, Southern blight sclerotia, or black turfgrass ataenius raster patterns.
