Photo of the week: fungus gnats

The fungus gnat adult, shown here, is a small (1/16 - 1/8 inch, or 1.5 - 3 mm in length), dark colored fly, with long, thread-like antennae, and long, mosquito-like legs. While this insect is very rarely a pest on turf, the small larvae (maggots) occasionally aggregate to form long, snake-like apparations that glide across golf course greens, and that can cause some consternation.
