Photo of the week: winter color

There are substantial differences in color among turfgrass species in cool temperatures. Dormant Zoysia japonica becomes a canvas of straw-colored leaves, while Stenotaphrum secundatum leaves retain green color even when nighttime temperatures are low enough for frost.

James Huntoon shared this image from a lawn near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Stenotaphrum secundatum leaves are green. Most of the Zoysia japonica leaves have completely lost their green color.
