Thatch collapse

Thatch collapse looks a lot like the most benign form of fairy ring — with sunken circular patches of turf, 3 inches to 1 foot in diameter, with the turf in the rings sometimes darker green than the surrounding area. The sunken patches are due to the degradation of thatch, and a white fungal mycelium is usually present on the thatch.
