To the untrained eye, the presence of nematodes in this turf sample looks alarming. But these nematodes do not feed on or damage turf, or on any other plant. Instead, they get nourishment from bacteria, decaying organic matter and other sources. Free living nematodes do not usually possess the needle-like mouthpart known as a stylet. Plant parasitic nematodes, by contrast, have stylets which are used to puncture plant cells.
