Video: Poa toupee

What happens when spring aeration pulls up the surface layer of a poa green? A poa toupee. In this case study, springtime aeration resulted in lifting the surface thatch, mat, and roots from the underlying root zone. This is not necessarily a problem, unless rolling efforts to smooth the surface grind newly developing roots off at the interface between the surface thatch layer and the soil.
