Alien invaders on golf course greens

There has been some recent interest on Twitter about a strange insect phenomenon — thousands of maggots aggregating into one large "super maggot" that slithers across golf course greens. The culprits are small insects called dark winged fungus gnats (Lycoriella and Bradysia).
